In this three-part Digital Institute, Fr. Ron Oakham, O.CARM, will focus on ministry to baptized Christians seeking to enter the full communion of the Catholic Church. Fr. Ron will explore the Church’s shift in its ecumenical stance as articulated in the Vatican II Decree on Ecumenism and the rite developed after the Council in light of this decree. In tandem with the General Directory for Catechesis, we will review the rite’s vision for formation of the catechized and the uncatechized candidates from other denominations as well as that of the uncatechized but baptized Catholic. Finally, we will consider adaptions, schedules, and other pastoral considerations.

Recommended Resource

In this book, Ronald Oakham grounds his proposal for the reception of baptized Christians in the Church’s Decree on Ecumenism and the text of the Rite of Reception into the Full Communion of Catholic Church. Using the practices of experienced parish ministers around the country, he describes a path for the preparation of both catechized and uncatechized candidates grounded in their Baptism. Finally, he discusses the celebration of the Rite of Reception and mystagogical reflection.
